In the first seven months of the year, through July, 274,513 new and used homes changed hands, 11% more than the same period last year. Taking into account only the data for July, the sale of housing rose 16.8% in relation to the same month of 2016, to 38,841 operations, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).
The market adds three consecutive months of promotions, albeit at a smoother pace than the previous two months. In June it rose by 19.3% and in May it rebounded by 23%, reaching its highest number of transactions since February 2011. A month earlier, in April, housing sales fell by more than 8%, ending 14 consecutive months of year-on-year increases.
Although the transmission of new construction starts to pick up (up 12.5% year-on-year), sales levels are still very low compared to second-hand homes (an increase of 17.7%). Thus, eight out of ten houses transmitted in July were used (17.7% new plant).
